Large language models don't read words directly. They break text, code, or data down into character clusters called tokens. On average, 1 token is about 4 characters or 0.75 words of standard English.
Why Token Counts Differ
Every model family uses its own custom vocabulary and tokenizer. A string like "Hello, world!" can be 2 tokens on one model and 4 on another. We call official API endpoints to ensure your counts match actual billing.
